3 Ways to Overcome Financial Temptation
When you want something super badly, but you know you shouldn’t, it’s temptation. It could be raising your voice in anger or eating 3 too many donuts. But what does financial temptation look like, and what can you do about it?
Financial temptation is just like any other unhealthy desire, but let’s be more specific. Sometimes, you know you should be saving for the future, but you push it off to the back of your mind. Or maybe you know you shouldn’t buy that 50th pair of shoes, but you give it a go anyway. Whatever your financial temptations are, we all deal with them. It’s just a part of your relationship with money.
Financial or not, any temptation can turn into a blazing fire if left unchecked. So let’s talk about 3 things you can do to have a healthier relationship with money, and enjoy the benefits of sticking to the plan you know you should.
1. Talk to Somebody
Being alone in your financial decisions means that no one will congratulate you when you do the right thing, or encourage you to change when you cave in. But don’t just talk to anybody. Talk to someone who is going to challenge you to grow. It is so much easier to overcome your temptations when someone has your back!
2. Set Boundaries
If you have a problem with spending, then make it easier on yourself to overcome it. Don’t make it harder by looking for deals for stuff you don’t even want or need, and stay away from window shopping. If you can set boundaries for any of your financial temptations, it will be easier for you to conquer them.
3. Reward Yourself
Managing money takes a ton of self-control, and it can be hard to pick yourself up after a few bad decisions. A healthy relationship with money isn’t always all or nothing. Sometimes, it’s a little in the middle. For example, if you are struggling to save or get out of debt, then set up a rewards program for yourself. For every few dollars you put towards your goal, you get something nice for behaving! The further along you get, the bigger your reward. Sure, it will take you longer to meet your goal, but at least you’ll actually get there!
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.1 Corinthians 10:13
No matter what your temptations are, God has given you the strength to overcome them all. Don’t let your temptations hold you back from the life God wants you to live. Through prayer and steadfastness, you can overcome them all.
